What Is Anaesthetics Training?

  • 2 year programme. Trainees can apply for higher training (ST3) following completion of the programme.

  • Bi-annual recruitment (August start and February start).

  • Core Anaesthetics and ACCS/anaesthetics recruitment performed simultaneously (ie one application).

Interview Stations:

3 stations: Portfolio, Clinical and Presentation

2 assessors at each station (scoring will be independent)

Clinical Station (10 minutes)

  • You will be provided with the clinical scenario at interview. 

  • You will be given 5 minutes to review the scenario before entering the assessment room.

  • This station tests your clinical judgement, ability to perform under pressure and ability to work effectively within a team setting.

Portfolio Station (20 minutes)

  • You will be required to complete a "self-assessment" of your portfolio prior to the interview. 

  • The first 10 minutes of this station will be used to review your "self-assessment" and confirm your score against the evidence provided in your submitted portfolio.

  • This will be followed by a 10 minute detailed discussion about your portfolio.  You will be given the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to the specialty, discuss your achievements et cetera.

Presentation Station (10 minutes)

  • You will be given a presentation topic on the day and allowed 10 minutes to prepare a presentation. 

  • You will be expected to deliver a 5 minute presentation.

  • This will be followed by 5 minutes of questions from the assessors. 

  • This station primarily assesses your ability to communicate effectively, your organisational skills and your ability to perform under pressure.
