What Is GP Training?

  • 3 year specialty programme

  • Generally consists of 18 months in hospital-based rotations and 18 months in general practice.

  • Possible hospital posts include: general medicine, elderly care, paediatrics (hospital or community), emergency medicine, psychiatry (general or old age), OBGYN, ENT, opthalmology, dermatology and palliative care.

  •  Twice yearly recruitment (August and February start).

Selection Specifics:

  • Initial applications are made through Oriel.

  • Eligible applicants are subsequently invited to sit the Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MRSA).

  • As per the current GP recruitment website: "All applicants who achieve a combined total score of 575 in the MSRA will qualify for a streamlined route which does not require them to attend a face-to-face assessment at Selection Centre." (Reference: ST1 Guidance for Applicants 2019-20. The General Practice (GP) National Recruitment Office. Accessed: https://gprecruitment.hee.nhs.uk/Recruitment/Applicant-Guidance/GPST1)

  • Applicants who pass the MRSA but who do not qualify for direct pathway offers (ie don't attain a total score of 575 or above) are requested to complete assessments at the Selection Centre.

Selection Centre Assessments

  • 2 assessment types: scenario simulation and written assessment.

Simulation Exercises (3 x 10 minutes)

  • You will be expected to undertake 3 simulated consultations: one with a patient, one with a carer/relative and a third with a hospital professional.

Written Exercise (30 minutes)

  • This exercise tests your ability to prioritise issues and provide justification for your response.

Example practice questions can be found here.
